Strategy Writeup
This boss is accompanied by lots of hounds. Don't let them backstab you when you focus on the boss.
Simple Strategy if you can one-shot the small dogs; The Alpha (Boss) Will barely attack the player if you're not too close so when he charges you, dodge to the side, and take 1 or 2 steps back to be at medium-range. Then ru***** down while he stares at you, and howls. A few seconds after howling, make sure to turn around and quickly take out the small dogs, and dodge the boss' charge again. Keep repeating this, and you should have him down really fast.
Attacks & Counters
Attack | Counter |
Phase 1 | |
Howl and summon ads: It will howl and summon ads | Use the opportunity to fire at the boss. Kill the ads as soon as you see them |
Charge and strike: It will charge at you and bite you | Dodge to either side and fire at it. |
Maul Lore
Maul is the alpha of the pack. The pack did not attack the Houndmaster because of the Control Rod on his forehead which allowed him to control the hounds. Once broken, the hounds were free and Maul attacked and killed him as a result.

how rare is finding her? i rerolled multiple adventure stories and haven't found her

My favorite part of this fight was at the end when my character was standing in a pile of dead hounds and said: "Wow... That was RUFF"

Maul is female, as mentioned by the hound master. I just wanted to point that out because it says "he" in the strategy.

on every page it says "if you die" and doesn't explain what happens if you don't die. why even put that if you aren't going to explain the alternative?

Oh Shoot, i just use the explosive mod blow the whole pack with the houndmaster, then kill the maul, didn't received the control rod

100% truly an optional boss. You can sneak past. If you don’t make noise and don’t wake the pack then you don’t fight. Just did it.

If you talk to him, he's actually a vendor that sells jerky that increases your crit damage for 60min

could be a bug: I destroyed the Master's device, but the Maul didn't attack the Master neither do the mongrels, they only attack me. and the Master just stood there doing nothing other than spasming, I had to kill him myself. but still got the Control Rod.

If you destroy the rod and allow maul to kill the houndmaster, you will get both rewards after completing the encounter

so i destroyed the rod in his face killed the small dogs died to maul still got all rewards (hound collar included) then i came back and none of them would wake up from their sleep as i shotgunned them weird bug

Mannnnn....I didnt even shoot the houndmaster but once to initiate the fight (beam rifle 1 second hit) and he stood up and begin attacking and the damn dogs still *****ing killed him. I needed the damn houndchoker!

If Wud spawns is Maul guaranteed to spawn too considering you need control rod?

I don't know that it's a bug or not, but I think his weakness is the fire. I mean, not a fire weapon, but a bonfire. When I was staying near a bonfire, then Maul didn't want to charge on me. He just was staying near and didn't attack :D Just try it out, maybe it's not a bug :)

Completely optional, you can just stealth and walk through the boss room. Also the hound master will sell you jerky

I accidentaly found Cheese strat for this boss, from which i basically took 2 hits in all fight (after dying one time to boss). When i came to boss room i instantly started crouch-walking and walked around the pack. Exited the dungeon, came back, shot one dog, died, then i was respawned at the back of the arena, entered it, summoned 2 minions from the "Seed caller" perk and those little guys basically did all the job for me, but the strange thing is that NO dog attacked me. They were literally next to me Ofc i shot off the "Control Rod" off of Houndmasters head, but the hounds didn't even attack him. After a while when the Maul had less than 50% HP she DID charge me, therefore the 2 hits. Perhaps this cheese will help any new players.
