Unstable Quills is a Weapon Mod in Remnant: From the Ashes. Weapon Mods are components that grant active abilities which can be used in and out of combat. These Mods provide a variety of effects including dealing damage, healing, buffing players and more. Most Mods can be freely slotted in and out of standard Weapons, while the unique Boss Weapons have their own Mods that cannot be removed. Weapon Mod abilities require Mod Power to use, which is generated by attacking enemies.
Remnant Unstable Quills Mod Information
Unstable Quills is a Damage-focused mod that allows the caster to unleash a rapid burst of 12 quills which attach to their target. The quills can then be detonated with a second cast, dealing 15 Corrosive Damage each in a small radius. The quills can be overcharged by shooting the enemy they are attached to, until they glow. Once the quills glow, detonation will deal double damage per quill. The mod holds up to 3 Charges.
Unstable Quills can be an extremely powerful mod as it can gain bonuses from Mod Damage, Elemental Damage and Explosion Damage effects. However, it can be quite clunky to use as you will first need to attach the quills onto an enemy, shoot them enough times to overcharge them and then detonate them with a second cast. There is also a limited amount of time for detonation, and if you miss the window, the quills simply dissipate, dealing no damage. Unstable Quills is best used on larger opponents that are much easier to hit with all the quills. Do note that the quills will also attach to the environment and can still be detonated in this case, but they can only be overcharged if they are embedded into enemies.
Unstable Quills Mod Properties
- Unstable Quills will deal a minimal amount of damage when they latch onto opponents. Detonation is required to achieve the damage numbers listed in the description.
- Quill Overcharging varies from weapon to weapon. Higher fire-rate weapons such as the Submachine Gun require more shots to achieve overcharge, while slower, single-shot weapons like the crossbow can achieve overcharge in 1-2 shots.
- While the mod can hold up to 3 Charges, you cannot use subsequent charges until the previous one has either been detonated or the quills have dissipated as a result of not detonating them in time.
- Damage dealt by quill detonation is affected by the level of the Weapon that the mod is equipped in. Each weapon level grants +1.5 damage on detonation per quill, or +3 damage on overcharged detonation per quill. At Weapon Level 20, each quill deals 45 damage on detonation, or 90 damage on overcharged detonation.
- Unstable Quills' damage is further affected by Mod Damage bonuses, such as those provided by the Evocation Trait. This includes the damage dealt when the quills are fired and latch onto enemies.
- Corrosive Damage is considered Elemental Damage, and is therefore affected by the Wisdom Trait and similar effects.
- Unstable Quills' detonation damage is affected by Explosion Damage bonuses, such as those provided by the Demolitionist trait and similar effects. Note that Explosion Damage bonuses do not affect the damage that quills do upon attaching onto an enemy, only the detonation.
- Note that Elemental Damage and Explosion Damage bonuses are not reflected in the mod's description in the menu, but are included in the damage calculation for the portions that they apply to (detonation).
- The Vulcan's Detonator amulet works amazingly with Unstable Quills, granting its detonations a +25% damage boost and afflicting enemies hit with the Burning effect, dealing damage-over-time.

Me and my friend met the boss and got this mod without any DLC. Weird.

This is currently bugged. Doesn't apply corrosive debuff to enemies, but does to allies and self...
Incredibly powerful but be careful in multiplayer, very buggy and will seriously injure your teammates if they're in the explosion range around the enemy.

dots count for the damage cap so you could fire a slayer bolt or inflict burn on the target and this lets the buffed damage proc faster so you get a nice burst with this and I've had it chunk bosses nicely with this
