Status Effect
Increase Ranged damage by 10%. When dealing Non-Critical damage with a firearm, Crit Chance is increased by 2% and Crit damage is increased by 5%. When a Critical Hit occurs, Crit Chance and Crit Chance damage are reset.

Shattered Vertebrae is an Amulet and an accessory in Remnant: From the Ashes. Shattered Vertebrae isn't a Craftable Item. Amulets provide additional protection or other bonuses to your character, add buffs to the player's Stats, and resistance to Status Ailments. Different accessories have different defense values and are, therefore, more or less effective.

Magier never wasted a blow. If his first strike did not kill a foe, then it taught him how to.

I wrote a simulator for this because I was curious if it would outperform Heart of Darkness for DPS given this has a base 10% ranged damage increase. The short answer is no, Heart of Darkness does slightly more damage.

The slightly longer answer: the lower your crit chance, and the higher your crit damage, the more effective this amulet is. With all crit traits maxed, and a weapon with 5% crit chance (i.e. 30% crit chance), this is about 96% as effective as Heart of Darkness. At 50% crit chance it's 94% as effective.
So using this amulet you'd never want to increase your crit chance, only crit damage. As far as I know we can only do this with Ring of the Mantis, and the extra 20% has negligible impact in this comparison and could probably be replaced with far better rings.

This assumes the condition of just repeatedly firing with the same weapon, however. It could be viable to switch to a stronger weapon if you've not had a crit for a while and use that for burst damage, or use a weapon mod. But given we have 30% minimum crit chance with maxed traits...the extra 5% per failed crit won't add up very much.

In short... Heart of Darkness is better DPS in nearly every scenario, but only by a bit, and obviously comes with a debuff. So it's up to the user really.

As extra testing, I also found things like the radioactive ember or storm amulet (+15% damage) to be about equal in ranged DPS to the vertebrae, assuming 30% crit chance. It slowly drops off as crit chance increases to 50%, by only by 1-2% effectiveness

Made a ridiculous build with this. Pair it up with the coach gun and sawed off as the secondary. Hunters halo first ring, Iskal hunter band as the second ring. Bandit/Brigand as the armor.

Reasons: Coach gun and sawed off both have a 5% crit chance, the lowest it can get. This means it is the most likely to proc off of the shattered vertebrae amulet.
Both the rings will increase the range of the guns, and significantly reduce the barrel spread. It will turn both the coach gun and sawed off into a laser beam. Then you get the procs with the bandit armor. There are many instances whilst bossing, that i'll shoot 6 or so coach gun bullets before needing to reload/switch weapon. I've also had it where the amulet procs on the last extended bullet and you hit for crazy numbers.

This is actually one of the more interesting necklaces. Makes it good for low-crit fire arms, and if you pay attention use a heavy hitting weapon when on high stacks - like the caustic mace.
