Wailing Tree is a Random Event in Remnant: From the Ashes. Random events act like side quests where players need to complete some requests in order to obtain a reward. The events may or may not appear on your play through, requiring a restart for a chance of getting them.

Wailing Tree Information
- When you get out of the first dungeon, you may find the Wailing Tree close to it.
- Obtaining Twisted Idol: Shoot the tree to start a wave based fight, lasting until the tree is killed. This will reward the player with the Twisted Idol, and lock the player out from obtaining the Bark Skin Trait for this run.
- Obtaining Bark Skin Trait: Find the Mad Merchant (may have to re-roll to get him if you can't find him) and speak with him until you are given the option to demand his mask. Kill him to obtain the Twisted Mask. Equip the mask and interact with the Wailing Tree. The tree will gift the player Bark Skin, and die. This locks the player out from obtaining the Twisted Idol. The Trait can only be obtained by one player per playthrough.

Apparently it is still possible to get both rewards in the same run: equip the mask and speak to the tree for the first reward, then travel to ward 13, then travel back to the checkpoint and immediately shoot the tree to start the fight for the second reward. (btw this was done in adventure mode)

I had the tree in the are with the ranged enemies. Long after getting bark skin one if the enemies shot the tree triggering the waves and I got the idol as well.

I was just playing around with guns and suddenly got a health bar on screen telling me to kill the tree.

Add to the article that the tree can summon vampires.

Is it possible to reroll the tree in adventure mode even if you've killed it in your campaign play through?

When it says "once per playthrough" does that mean character? Or can I reset the world after getting the idol in hopes for the mask, then re-roll for the tree again for the trait?

It seems shooting the tree right after he gives you the trait has been fixed, I immediately shot him after he dropped me and nothing happened, and his reticle stayed green.
Maybe you need someone to shoot the tree as he picks you up.

if you already have the trait and try to get it again you get a trait point instead.

A random guy who joined my world took the rewards and left me with nothing to gain. It was even my first playthrough too :(

Same as others, I got the trait and even after dying, shooting him triggered the waves and granted the idol.

I was able to get the Idol and the Perk, After Getting the Perk via the mask, Restart the game and the Tree Should glow again, Shoot it and both Item can be obtained in a singular world

I was able to get both, got the bark skin then shot him. Not my world in case it makes a difference.
This tree seems to be a reference to the one in the prequel game which also grabs you, infects you with the root, and tells you it'll be watching.
