What is Remnant: From the Ashes?

Rise from the Ashes as a Remnant of Humankind

The world has been thrown into chaos by an ancient evil from another dimension. Humanity is struggling to survive, but they possess the technology to open portals to other realms and alternate realities. They must travel through these portals to uncover the mystery of where the evil came from, scavenge resources to stay alive, and fight back to carve out a foothold for mankind to rebuild...

Remnant: From the Ashes is a third-person survival action game developed by Gunfire Games, known for their work on the Darksiders franchise. The game is published by Gearbox Publishing, a powerhouse in the gaming world known for the critically acclaimed Borderlands series.

Remnant tells the tale of a post-apocalyptic world overrun by a malevolent, all-conquering force known only as The Root. Driven by unknown motives, The Root traveled from far away realms and laid claim to Earth almost a century ago, with the dwindling numbers of human survivors having struggled to push back against these interdimensional invaders. However, humanity still has a fighting chance — Ward 13, one of the last bastions of humankind and its survivors have been uncovering decades of military and scientific research which have led to the discovery of ancient writings, and mysterious crystals known as the World Stones. Within these stones lay the power to open portals into other realms and dimensions, but their full potential is known only to the ward's Founder who has gone missing. As one of the last remnants of mankind, you are tasked with journeying into these worlds in search of the Founder, finding the source of The Root, and the means to eradicate them once and for all.

Drawing inspiration from the slew of hardcore games such as the Dark Souls franchise and other games that became extremely popular in recent years and have collectively become known as the Soulslike genre, Remnant wears its influences on its sleeves. Its worlds and environments are harsh and inhabited by wicked monstrosities that will stop at nothing to destroy the would-be adventurers that dare venture out of the safety of their ward facilities.

Much like the Dark Souls games, combat in Remnant is punishing, with enemies often presenting very tough challenges that demand skill, understanding of your equipment, as well as learning enemy patterns and how best to approach each battle. It also features menacing boss encounters with complex mechanics that will require much more involved strategies and proper preparation to overcome. Remnant employs semi-procedurally generated worlds which change with every playthrough, allowing for variations of enemies and bosses, events, loot and even story-related elements. Venture solo or join a team of up to two other players as you fight to survive in this desolate world.

Remnant: From the Ashes Gameplay Features

  • Journey through Dangerous Worlds: Retake the Earth by pushing back against the Root. Harness the power of the World Stone and travel to the barren desert world of Rhom, the jungles of Yaesha, the swamps of Corsus and more. Each world hosts its own denizens and civilizations, but do not expect a welcoming environment.
  • Choose Your Archetype: Create your own survivor from three archetypes: The Scrapper, the Ex-Cultist and the Hunter. Each one possesses a different set of starting equipment comprised of Weapons, Armor, Mods and Traits, offering a basis for your preferred playstyle. Players are not locked to an archetype's playstyle as Remnant offers a free-form progression system that allows you to build your character as you wish.
  • Collect and Craft Powerful Equipment: Scavenge your way through devastated lands and acquire a vast selection of Weapons of both earthly and alien design. Survivors can equip one Hand Gun and one Long Gun. Assassinate your adversaries from a distance with a Sniper Rifle, strafe around massive creatures and unload your machine pistols or take your destruction to the next level with the Particle Accelerator. Survivors can also defend themselves up close with an array of melee weapons including Swords, Scythes and Hammers. Supplement your arsenal further with a variety of Armor and Accessories, many of which offer Set Bonuses and other powerful effects.
  • Modify Your Arsenal: Unleash your potential with Weapon Mods which grant Survivors powerful abilities which can turn the tide of battle. These skills include creating healing auras for you and your teammates, imbuing ammunition with fire to deal damage over time and summoning a canine companion to fight alongside you for a limited time. Weapon Mod abilities are powered by killing enemies and most mods can be slotted freely into weapons. Some of the most powerful weapons have pre-socketed mods that cannot be removed, but typically have devastating abilities that can give you the upper hand against the most difficult encounters.
  • Fight Through Merciless Opponents: Blast your way through a horde of over 100 enemy types including the malevolent Root and their alien foot soldiers, raging behemoths, as well as the hostile warriors of each world's civilizations. Challenge massive bosses such as the dragon Singe, the menacing Ent or the enigmatic Claviger. Each boss can be defeated in multiple specific ways and successfully doing so will reward an alternate piece of weaponry or the materials needed to craft them.
  • Strength in Numbers: Invading other worlds to seek an end to the Root is dangerous and survival is far from guaranteed. Team up with up to two other players to increase your chances of survival. Teamwork is necessary to make it through the game’s toughest challenges… and unlock its greatest rewards.
  • Campaign and Adventure Modes: Remnant's dynamically generated worlds draw from a randomized pool of dungeons, bosses, events and other content available in a single World. This means that you cannot experience all that a World has to offer in a single Campaign playthrough. However, players can embark on an Adventure Mode session which is independent of the Campaign and allows them to re-roll a single World in order to farm bosses and their resources or experience alternate events and dungeons without having to restart the entire campaign.

Earth

earth locations remnant from the ashes wiki guide

A far cry from what it once was, the Earth was ravaged by the arrival of The Root nearly a century ago. Their coming was heralded by mankind's reckless meddling with forces they do not understand and the military's experimentation on human subjects using the World Stones to connect to distant worlds. The Root's invasion was swift and unexpected, and in a few short years, they had wiped out most life on Earth. Despite their valiant effort to mount a defense and push back against the invaders, the humans were driven to near-extinction, and the last surviving members of civilization have gone into hiding underground in loose tribes. The Earth is in a state of decay, with its cities mere ghost towns devoid of activity, save for the tireless Root roaming their streets and dilapidated buildings, ever on the hunt for living scavengers that dare leave the safety of their Wards, massive underground bunkers that house the remnants of this world.

Rhom

rhom locations remnant from the ashes wiki guide

An irradiated desert world home to a technologically advanced race known as the Basha who were governed by a mysterious, almost shamanistic priesthood. Rhom was divided into several warring nation-states that were roused into an uneasy unification by the invasion of The Root several millennia before they ever made contact with the Earth. Having never encountered an enemy as relentless and brutal as The Root, the Basha were forced to utilize a doomsday device that successfully decimated the invaders, but at too great a cost. Rhom now lies in ruin, its environment hostile with several tribes breaking off from the Basha and forming a rebellion as the Root lie in wait, for an opportunity to launch a second invasion.

Yaesha

yaesha locations remnant from the ashes wiki guide

The jungle world of Yaesha is home to the Pan, a race of extremely territorial goat-like humanoids who live in tribes governed by an immortal priesthood. Divided into castes of Commoners and Nobility, the Pan serve a strict culture that is violently xenophobic to all other sentient races. Yaesha is a lush and verdant landscape, brimming with greenery and wildlife. Its forests host mighty trees where the Commoners build their dwellings, while the Nobility live in the massive ziggurats that dot the land. Yaesha has drawn the attention of the Root, who constantly send scouting parties to survey and lay claim to sections of this world, little by little. With the threat of a full invasion looming, the Pan are ever vigilant and will viciously defend their home against any and all potential invaders.

Corsus

corsus locations remnant from the ashes wiki guide

Corsus is an ice planet-turned-swamp lands; a product of thousands of years of magma and heat welling up from the planet's core through geothermal fissures and converting its frigid landscapes into a sweltering network of bogs and marshes. Corsus is home to the Iskal, a race of intelligent, winged humanoids who have evolved and adapted alongside the planet's unique ecosystems. Corsus is yet untouched by the Root and its denizens live in harmonious clans where disputes are rarely seen. Corsus is available in the base game and is expanded on further in the Swamps of Corsus DLC.

Reisum

reisum locations remnant from the ashes wiki guide

Reisum is another world introduced in the Subject 2923 DLC. Comprised of snow-capped mountain peaks and vast frozen tundras, Reisum is a perpetually frigid environment owing to its distance from its sun. Its bitter cold and unrelenting winter make life on the surface impossible even for the most unwavering of creatures. Reisum's is inhabited by a host of interesting creatures, the most prominent of which are the Urikki, giant rat-like bipedals who have dominated the surface world through sheer strength and ferocity. The Urikki are in a constant state of war against the Emin, smaller creatures who inhabit vast networks of tunnels and burrows underneath the ice.

Build your own Hero

Choose Your Archetype

Archetypes in Remnant are a choice available during Character Creation. They determine your starting loadout and can point you in the direction of a particular playstyle. Players are not locked into their chosen archetypes and are free to build their character however they wish with Traits, Weapons, Armor and more. There are three Archetypes to pick from when creating a character:

archetypes overview remnant from the ashes wiki guide

The Scrapper excels in close-range combat. Wielding a shotgun and a hammer, and equipped with heavy armor, the Scrapper can take much more damage before needing to heal and is the best pick for players who want to smash through the early levels with little regard for tactics. The Scrapper also starts with a weapon mod that allows them to inflict damage-over-time effects.

The Ex-Cultist begins with a short-to-medium ranged coach gun and a very useful weapon mod that sets down a healing aura which recovers health for the player and their teammates or companions. The Ex-Cultist's strengths lie in their ability to be self-sufficient, and is a great pick for players who wish to conserve on consumables or play a healing role within a team.

The Hunter starts off with weapons and mods that center around dealing damage and exploiting enemy weak spots. They excel in dealing damage from afar but may have difficulty in enclosed spaces. The Hunter's starting traits are also conducive to a stealthy playstyle which can offer some survivability, and their weapon mod allows them to see enemies through walls, allowing for strategizing and preventing ambushes.

Strengthen Your Traits

Traits are special passive abilities that players can unlock. These abilities have a plethora of effects ranging from granting armor-piercing capabilities to firearms or improving the rate at which players regenerate lost health, to increasing the speed at which they vault over obstacles or improving the damage dealt by various other effects. Traits are the key to building your character in your preferred playstyle and allow you to branch off from your chosen Archetype and their starting equipment.

There are 50 Traits in Remnant: From the Ashes, and each trait is discovered by performing certain feats such as defeating a large number of opponents using a certain type of equipment or attack, reviving teammates in co-op play a number of times or completing certain boss encounters. Discovering traits is an integral part of the Remnant experience that rewards you as you play the game normally.

Each individual trait can be leveled up to a maximum of 20 by investing Trait Points earned through leveling up or by finding tomes hidden throughout the different worlds. With their vast amount of passive abilities granted, Traits offer players a tremendous amount of flexibility in rounding out their playstyle and the possibilities are nearly endless when it comes to creating an effective build to push back against the Root and other hostiles.

Arm Yourself Against a Hostile World

Weapons

Wield a deadly arsenal of Weapons both of Earthly origin and alien make. Players can equip one Long Gun, one Side Arm and one Melee Weapon at any one time.

Long Guns are powerful and typically boast the longest range while Side Arms allow you to engage enemies from medium distance. Both types have their own perks and advantages and each individual weapon has properties that make them unique and more effective depending on your encounters. You can also cleave through hordes of opponents with various melee weapons including swords, axes and hammers.

Weapons can be found in the world or obtained through crafting by finding unique materials and other resources and turning them in to Rigs the Blacksmith in Ward 13. Each weapon can also be upgraded a number of times to increase their offensive power.

Armor

Armor plays an important role in improving both your offensive and defensive capabilities. Divided into Head, Body and Leg Armor, most armor pieces belong to a set and wearing one or more pieces of a set provides various Set Bonuses that grant passive special effects, complementing your chosen Traits and other factors.

elder set remnantradiant set remnantvoid set remnant

The more pieces from a set equipped, the greater the benefits provided. Much like Weapons, Armor can be upgraded by handing over resources to the Blacksmith. Players can also equip one Amulet and two Rings to further supplement their other pieces of equipment. These accessories grant more involved and conditional bonuses that can drastically change your playstyle including the ability to heal after performing a perfect dodge or trading a percentage of your equipped weapons' range for increased firepower.

Weapon Mods

Traditional active abilities in Remnant take the form of Weapon Mods — powerful attachments for your Weapons which grant a large selection of skills that can be activated in combat. These skills round out a player's build and allow them to even the odds against the hordes of monstrous creatures they will encounter throughout their adventure.

These skills vary from mod to mod and include dealing elemental damage, afflicting enemies with crowd control effects, to more interesting and spectacular effects such as conjuring plant life to draw the enemy's aggression or summoning tame versions of enemies who will fight alongside you for a short duration.

Weapon Mods can be crafted after obtaining unique materials from Bosses and Mini-Bosses, and returning them to McCabe in Ward 13. Most Mods can be socketed onto standard weapons, but certain Boss Weapons come pre-socketed with powerful, unique Mods that cannot be removed.

Steel Yourself Against Ferocious Foes

Remnant: From the Ashes features over 100 Enemy types across its 5 major realms. Each realm is host to a dominant race, tribe or sect that is comprised of varying classes of warriors, marksmen, brutes and many more. Enemies have a very diverse set of behaviors, as well as weaponry and attacks that they use. Many also possess weaknesses that can be exploited or strengths that players need to be aware of.

The Root

the root remnant

The Root is predominantly found on Earth, but their all-conquering presence can be felt across the different realms. The Root come in a variety of terrifying incarnations; from small, fast creatures with mouths like bear traps to enormous, lumbering behemoths that can easily slaughter entire teams of armed survivors.

The Buri Tribesmen

The proud and powerful inhabitants of Rhom who broke off from the Basha priesthood, and have formed small, secretive enclaves to start a rebellion.

The Iskal

The Iskal of Corsus possess a unique and dangerous DNA combination of both mammalian and insectoid, allowing them to evolve and adapt to the unique environment they call home.

The Pan

Situated in the realm of Yaesha, The Pan are a race of incredibly agile, goat-like bipeds with a unique hierarchical society governed by an immortal priesthood and divided into castes of Commoners nad Nobility.

The Urikki

Giant warlike creatures that resemble the rodents of Earth. The Urikki have become the dominant force of Reisum owing to their strength and ferocity.

Each world is also host to a number of Bosses — enormously powerful monstrosities that will test players' skills with unique mechanics and overwhelming challenges. Bosses are divided into Dungeon Bosses which are more powerful variants of Elites, but are generally smaller scale encounters than the World Bosses, who are typically found at the end of an area and are mandatory for progression through a gameplay session.

Conquer Dynamically Generated Worlds

Dynamic Generation

Each playthrough of Remnant: From the Ashes employs a Dynamic Generation system which generates a randomized layout from a pool of possibilities unique to each World. Everything from map arrangement, available dungeons, loot distribution, enemy and boss encounters, as well as NPCs and events are generated randomly upon entering each of the five realms. This means that no two playthroughs are the same and creates a large amount of replayability, as each world offers many different events and encounters that cannot all be experienced in a single playthrough.

Campaign and Adventure Mode

Dynamic Generation is applied to all game sessions as you start from the beginning of each realm, which means that you will miss out on more than half the game by simply playing through the Campaign. For this reason, the Adventure Mode was made available, which allows players to create free-roam session that is independent of their Campaign progress. In Adventure Mode, players can select from any of the realms they have unlocked in the Campaign and begin a playthrough of that realm only. This allows for the farming of dungeons, bosses and loot that are only available in a particular realm, without having to restart the entire Campaign. Any progress and items obtained in Adventure Mode is saved to your character and will be available when they return to their Campaign world.

Multiplayer Co-Op

Remnant can be played in a group of up to three players. Enemy difficulty will scale up to match the number of participants, boosting their health, damage and number, offering a much tougher challenge than solo. However, it also gives way to new strategies and ways to approach encounters that are impossible when playing alone. Do note that enemy scaling is heavily influenced by the player with the highest amount of equipment upgrades so you will need to take this into account when joining friends.

Additionally, session progress is only saved for the host which means only their Campaign or Adventure Mode sessions will be saved. Player progress is independent of session progress and any items, equipment and traits unlocked by players are saved to their character and will be available for use in their own worlds.

one of my favs, i know lots of people like spoon fed stories but i prefer to find it out myself, and tge gameplay is good and not glitchy, reminds me of dark souls but the deaths are not time wasting and combat is explained better along with explained dodge mwchanics. I do like dark souls also and both to me are great games.

Hate it. Unimaginative design, lack of veriety, spend 5 hours playing just earth due to cnstant unfinishable levels on earth wehre only 2 dungeons spawn and no pathway to progress. Shooting is boring, nothing to loot, ammo is only an issue in boss battles, and you can buy that many ammo boxes that even that isnt an issue. Just a rushed idea of "LeTs Do DaRk SoUlS bUt WiTh GuNs" but misses the beauty, veriety and balance of an actual soulsborne game

Awful game. Horrible design aesthetic. Crappy character creation. Unimmersive random generated levels that you don't want to explore. Loot is almost non existent and you have to replay/reload levels to grind. Shooting is ok but you get tired of it due to nonstop swarms and too few shootouts. Division 2, although flawed does everything better than this garbage.

Started yesterday. A bit frustrating but the game doesn't penalize you for dying like most games. It's definitely a game that makes me feel like I'm playing a decent game for once in 2020

Don't get me wrong this website is great, but if the developers are reading this, it would be great if they made an actual book guide.

Hi to the team of developers. I truly am enjoying your game but if can make one request is for a toggle on aim. It’s sometimes difficult for someone like me who suffers from joint pains on my fingers for holding the trigger for a period of time.

My own opinion: DLC too short 20 min worth of play/ reading lore on nightmare mode. 2-3 min explore new area then off to same earth dungeon maps area to hit the boss. very disappointing. no new enemy encounter. Boss fight not an challenge, easy to defeat. New armor design look like and copy off from another game (cant think off the top of my head), and you have to wear all three pieces just to get the effect for it. What an waste of time, poorly designed and executed, no wonder it was free.

I have a question: Does the reduced Nightmare Boss base health from 2 million to 1.5 million apply for all degrees of difficulty or only for Nightmare-mode?

If you don't love salting comments from people who don't understand how souls-like game play, don't go into the comments section of this wiki. Tons of people wasting their time writing*****ty comments about a game they don't understand.

                                                  • Should The Root page mention anything about the character's dialogue when seeing various high level enemies? Such as Flame Devils being called Immolators, Or Juggernauts being called Root Brutes? Or possibly a redirect when typing in those terms?

Melee weapon pages should note that there is a fourth attack type other than lunge, normal, and charge; there are also backstep attacks with some weapons even also having a unique charge back step attack(the Scythe and World Breaker, for example, have unique animations for both charged and uncharged backstep attacks)

I just made my account but is you see any modifications under "Anon-2D185" that was me. Just trying to complete as much of the wiki from the information I can gather from within the game.

                                                        • Me as well. Will most of you be playing on Steam or PS4? I've been playing on Steam bbut I like it well enough that I am happy I preordered for PS4 as well.
